Teachers: This Winter Break...Make a Break from Glasses

lasik for teachers
Teachers: You do so much more than educate on various subjects!
  • You mold young minds.
  • You become role models.
  • You inspire greatness.
  • You change lives.
During most of the calendar year teachers spend time giving to others...often performing your daily tasks looking through corrective lenses. This winter break, Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery encourages you to take the time and do something that will make your job – and your life – easier:

Blade-free LASIK vision correction in Charleston

Imagine how 20/20 vision could improve your classroom activities:
  • No searching for glasses left on filing cabinets, student desks or in the break room
  • No teaching breaks to readjust shifted contact lenses
  • No straining to see the clock on the wall (or those trouble-makers in the back of the room)
  •  Less eye strain when grading papers
Of course, not every teacher will have the right vision characteristics for LASIK. And Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery cannot guarantee that every LASIK patient will achieve 20/20 vision in Charleston. The only way to find out for sure is by scheduling a free LASIK Consultation.

Winter break is the perfect time to have LASIK. The procedure takes just 10-15 minutes per eye and most patients can resume activities the next day. By the time school starts back up, you should be ready to tackle the next round of curriculum with gusto…possibly without the need for glasses at all!

Call Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery today at 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com to schedule your free LASIK Consultation for winter break LASIK.

Eyeglasses for Eyestrain

If you work long hours at a computer, you are probably no stranger to eye strain in Charleston. This is an actual condition called computer vision syndrome (CVS) that can cause blurry vision, eye irritation, headaches neck pain and back pain.

Causes of Computer Vision Syndrome
CVS is like a repetitive stress injury that can worsen over time.
  •     Looking down at the keyboard and then back up to the monitor strains the eye muscles due to the constant shift of focus.
  • If you choose not to wear your prescription lenses as you work (to correct nearsightedness or astigmatism), you will be forced to strain to see the monitor clearly.
  • If you do not keep your lens prescription up-to-date, you may be adding to the eye strain.
  • The onset of presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) beginning around age 40 can make it more difficult to focus on the computer monitor.
  • Workstations that are not ergonomically-designed may cause you to crane your neck, slouch or arrange your body in an awkward position to compensate.

Look cool in your cubical!

Special computer glasses featuring lens coatings and tints that reduce glare can help to reduce the symptoms of CVS. These glasses can be purchased in non-prescription versions or in versions that support your specific refractive error. Before you invest in these glasses, be sure to read reviews online so you can make the best decision; these glasses don’t work for everyone.

Not surprisingly, prescription computer glasses cost more than non-prescription glasses. And if your prescription changes frequently, you will need to invest in new glasses regularly.

One way to combat the ongoing expense of glasses, contact lenses and cleaning solutions is by investing in the one-time cost of LASIK vision correction in Charleston. Dr.O'Day at Charleston Cornea and Refractive Surgery can determine if your eyes are right for LASIK during a free LASIK Consultation

Other Ways to Control Eyestrain
  •  Every 20 minutes on the computer look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is known as the 20-20-20 rule.
  •  Set a timer to remind yourself to take breaks from your screen (it’s easy to lose track of time when you are focused!)
  •  Identify and implement the right ergonomics for your computer workstation by visiting the OSHA website.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer monitor and reduce the glare on your screen from lights or windows.

20/20 doesn’t mean an end to 20-20-20

Even if you have a successful LASIK procedure at Charleston Cornea and Refractive Surgery and achieve 20/20 vision, it’s still important to practice the 20-20-20 rule! CVS can affect anyone who sits in front of a computer for long periods of time.

LASIK: The Jelly Club Alternative

holiday lasik

Your loved ones probably don’t want a “one year membership in the jelly-of-the-month club” this holiday…

And let’s face it: there are only so many bathrobes, coffee mugs, neckties and kitchen appliances a person needs. If you have a loved one who wears glasses or contacts, give the best gift ever this year: LASIK vision correction in Charleston

“Clark, that’s the gift that keeps on givin’ the whole year.” – Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Cousin Eddie was right! LASIK can reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contacts by slightly changing the shape of the cornea so light focuses properly on the retina (the back of the eye). Some people can even achieve 20/20 vision after LASIK, allowing them to…
  • Work
  • Play sports
  • Watch movies
  • Shop
  • Read
  • Wake up in the morning
…without the hassles of corrective lenses…all year long.

Every potential patient must have a proper LASIK Consultation to confirm candidacy for this popular procedure (there is no other way to know for sure). Charleston Cornea and Refractive Surgery offers free LASIK Consultations in Charleston to help jump start this process. You can schedule an appointment for your loved one (or yourself) online at charlestoncornea.com or by calling 843-856-5275.

You may be thinking that LASIK is too extravagant a gift. But with 0% LASIK financing options available, this becomes a very affordable option. During the Consultation you will find out exactly how much the procedure will cost.

Imagine the look on your loved one’s eyes when they open the gift of better vision this holiday! Contact Dr. O'Day to mark one more shopping item off your “to do” list this holiday

LASIK vs. PRK

lasik or prk

If you have been told you are not a good candidate for LASIK because your corneas are too thin, you may not have to abandon your dream of 20/20 vision.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a type of laser surgery in Charleston that can produce similar vision results to LASIK vision correction, and it can be performed on some patients with thin corneas.

The difference between LASIK and PRK is in the first step of the refractive surgery procedure.
  • LASIK: A hinged corneal flap is created to allow access to the underlying corneal tissue for laser treatment
  • PRK: the cornea’s outer layer (epithelial) is gently removed to allow access to the underlying corneal tissue for laser treatment
The laser refractive treatment is the same for both LASIK and PRK: the cornea is slightly reshaped to correct the refractive error and allow light to focus on the retina for clear vision. Each laser treatment can be completely customized to your unique eye.

After the laser procedure, the corneal flap is repositioned during LASIK; after PRK, the epithelial cells need time to regenerate over the eye. Recovery and final vision results for PRK will take longer and the healing process may be slightly more uncomfortable. However, there is no risk of corneal flap complications with PRK.

Take the first step in the LASIK process: take the free online LASIK Self-Evaluation on charlestoncornea.com. Then call Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery at 843-856-5275 to schedule your free LASIK Consultation to find out if LASIK or PRK might improve your vision. You can also schedule your appointment online.

Eye Makeup Safety

make up safety

Are you putting bacteria on your eyes?

Studies have shown that in as little as 3-months, bacteria can grow in mascara, eye shadow, eyeliners and more, leading to eye infections such as pink eye, dry eye, loss of eyelashes and more.

If just the thought of bacteria on your eyes makes you shudder, consider this: Makeup has expiration dates. Unfortunately, those expiration dates are NOT printed on the containers, tubes and sticks. It’s up to you to keep track of when you purchase cosmetics and toss them after a certain timeframe.

Eye infections can be avoided by following these safety tips:
  • Purchase new mascara and liquid eyeliner every 3 months; eye shadow every 12 months; eye pencil every 24 months
  • Do not share eye makeup with friends
  • Avoid using samples in stores
  • Do not apply eyeliner to the inner eye lash lines
  • Do not wear mascara that flakes
  • Close eye makeup containers tightly
  • If you wear contact lenses, put them in before applying eye makeup
  • Remove eye makeup at night (remove contact lenses first)
One way to avoid the “contact lens eye infection” trap is by having LASIK vision correction in Charleston to reduce or eliminate your dependence on contacts for clear vision. Of course, even if you achieve clear vision through LASIK, it will become even more important to protect your investment in your vision by practicing safe eye makeup application.

You may be tempted to hang on to eye makeup longer than the recommended timeframe because it can be quite expensive. However, when you consider the cost of treatment for eye infections and the potential for damaged vision, it will be more cost-effective to pay attention to how long your eye products stay in your makeup bag.

If you love wearing eye makeup, but your eyes are hidden behind corrective lenses, contact Dr. O'Day at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery to discuss the option of Charleston LASIK for your unique eyes. He offers a free LASIK Consultation to analyze your eyes and answer all of your questions about this popular vision procedure. To schedule your no-obligation appointment, call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com

Keep Your Eyes Safe in the Kitchen

lasik eye safety

At Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery, we have helped thousands of people achieve lens-free vision through laser vision correction. And while our LASIK in Charleston allows most of our patients to toss out their glasses, we encourage those patients to protect their new-found clear vision by wearing protective safety glasses when performing certain activities.

Most people know that safety glasses are important when playing contact sports, using power tools or working in the yard. But did you know that they are also important in the kitchen?

According to WebMD, almost half of the annual 2.5 million eye injuries occur in and around the home…and more than 40% of those happen during everyday activities like cooking. (Source: American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ocular Trauma)

Potential Causes of Kitchen Eye Injuries
Your eye can become injured during food prep, oven and stove cooking and cleaning.
  • Cleaning chemical splatters
  • Grease/oil splatters
  • Champagne corks
  • Steam burns
  • Spicy juices, such as cutting jalapeños and touching your eyes
  • Oven heat
It may seem a bit silly to wear glasses in the kitchen, but whether you’ve invested in your vision through LASIK or already have excellent vision, you don’t want to risk your eyesight to a freak kitchen accident. Get a pair of protective glasses that are approved by the American National Standards Institute and get cooking!

If you are tired of wearing glasses to read recipes, contact Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery to schedule a free LASIK Consultation and find out if LASIK is right for your eyes. You can call 843-856-5275 or schedule an appointment anytime day or night by visiting charlestoncornea.com

Jellyfish Day, Jellyfish Eyes

jelly fish lasik

Jellyfish Day is Nov. 3, 2014. It’s a rather odd observance for most people, but it got the staff at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery thinking about whether or not jellyfish have eyes. After some research, we learned that jellyfish do not have brains, hearts, ears, heads, feet, legs or bones…and most do not have eyes.

There are over 2,000 types of jellyfish and possibly hundreds of thousands more that are waiting to be discovered.

The highly venomous box jellyfish is the most dangerous. This type of jellyfish does have eyes…24 of them!
  • They have four different types of eyes.
  • One pair in each cluster contain a lens, retina, iris and cornea but only detect light and dark, rather than images, because they do not have a central nervous system.
  • Two of the eyes can see color.
  • Four of the upper lens eyes always point upward, even when they are upside-down, to allow them to navigate by looking out of the water.
The sting of these highly agile swimmers can be deadly for humans; if you happen to be scuba diving or snorkeling in tropical waters and see a jellyfish looking back at you, it’s best to keep your distance.

If you don’t have 20/20 vision while exploring under water, it may be more difficult to see this lurking gelatinous animal coming your way. Prescription goggles or wearing contact lenses are options to improve your vision under water, but having LASIK vision correction in Charleston can eliminate this hassle from your pre-swim preparations.

If you are an avid swimmer, scuba diver or snorkeler and would like to swim with visual freedom just like the box jellyfish, schedule a free LASIK Consultation today at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery. Dr. O'Day can’t promise you the same vision as what 24 eyes might provide, but he will determine whether or not your unique eye characteristics and eye health will support this popular procedure. To schedule your no-obligation appointment, call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com

LASIK & Dry Eye

lasik dry eye

Dry eye can be a fairly common side effect of LASIK vision correction due to the potential for reduced sensitivity of the corneal nerves, leading to a reduction in tear production. Tears are necessary to lubricate and protect the eyes and if there is not adequate tear production, the eyes can become irritated.

  • Excessive eye watering
  • Itching and burning
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Feeling of sand or grit in the eyes
  • Pain
  • Blurred vision

Dry eye after LASIK is typically temporary, but some patients can experience the symptoms of dry eye for months or years after LASIK. Lubricating eye drops can help minimize discomfort.

Some patients who have pre-existing dry eye may not be good candidates for LASIK in Charleston because the procedure might exacerbate the condition. Any existing symptoms of dry eye should be discussed with your ophthalmologist prior to having LASIK so your condition can be fully examined. Your eyes may be better suited for alternative laser vision correction procedures. Certain procedures may actually help improve pre-existing dry eye in Charleston.

Dr. O'Day at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery will discuss all of the risks of LASIK, including dry eye, as well as the benefits of LASIK,during a free LASIK Consultation. He will perform a comprehensive exam to ensure that your eyes are right for the procedure. To schedule your no-obligation appointment, call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com.

Serious Eye Conditions Growing in Young People

young people eye issues

According to Medical News Today, a recent survey of optometrists has shown that the number of young people being diagnosed with serious eye conditions such as dry eye and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) is growing. Many of these doctors were also concerned that certain sight-stealing vision conditions may be developing at a younger age:
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration
This phenomenon of deteriorating eye health may be due to any number of reasons, including:
  • Diabetes
  • Poor nutrition
  • Increased usage of computer, tablet or smart phone screens
  • Smoking
  • Lack of sunglasses
  • Improper contact lens usage
It’s important to note that even if you have your vision corrected through a procedure such as LASIK in Charleston, and even if you achieve 20/20 vision after the procedure, it is still possible to develop serious eye conditions. Regular eye exams are vital to the overall health of your eyes because they can detect any“silent” problems that are developing so treatment options can be explored.

If you are experiencing any changes in your vision or would like to learn more about ways to protect and preserve your eyesight, contact Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery at 843-856-5275 or charlestoncornea.com to schedule an eye examCharleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery also offers free LASIK Consultations to help patients reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts

2014 World Sight Day

Eye Exams

World Sight Day is October 9, 2014.  The call-to-action for this year’s observation is “No More Avoidable Blindness” and is part of an overall plan to reduce avoidable blindness by 25% by the year 2019. Created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), this initiative supports their overall theme of “Universal Eye Health” and protecting/preserving eyesight for people around the world.

In celebration of this event, Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery is urging people to make their eye health a top priority by scheduling an eye exam in Charleston. We also encourage you to spread the word about the importance of regular eye exams. Often people neglect their eyesight – until they experience a problem. Regular eye exams can detect conditions that may be silently robbing you of your vision, such as glaucoma or cataracts, and eye doctors can even detect underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or brain tumors.

During an eye exam, you may also learn that your eyes have the right conditions for vision correcting procedures, such as LASIK vision correction. During a free LASIK Consultation, you can learn about the pros and cons of LASIK, how LASIK technologies differ and find out if 20/20 vision without glasses is a possibility.

Make the most of World Sight Day 2014. Schedule your eye exam or free LASIK Consultation in Charleston today by contacting Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery at 843-856-5275 or charlestoncornea.com

Can Eye Exercises Improve Your Vision?

eye exercises lasik

If you have to wear corrective lenses to see clearly, you may be tempted to purchase eye exercise kits or start on an eye exercise regimen in order to reduce your need for glasses or contacts. The truth is that there has been no scientific evidence that eye exercises can improve your vision if you have:
  • Nearsightedness: good close-up vision but poor distance vision due to the shape of the cornea
  • Farsightedness: good distance vision but poor close-up vision due to the shape of the cornea
  • Astigmatism: blurry distance and close-up vision due to the shape of the cornea or lens
  • Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses): blurry close-up vision due to the loss of elasticity in the eye lens
There is no scientific research that clearly proves that eye exercises will change the shape of your cornea, the shape of your eye or restore flexibility to the eye lens.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are caused by a refractive error that can be corrected through laser procedures such as LASIK in Charleston. This process uses a laser to alter the cornea’s shape so light is focused correctly on the back of the retina. Many patients can achieve 20/20 vision with this procedure.

LASIK, however, cannot fully correct presbyopia. Monovision LASIK is one alternative for presbyopia, which corrects one eye for distance vision and one eye for close-up vision.

Before you start an eye exercise program, consult with your eye doctor to make sure this is a safe alternative for vision improvement. If you are looking for a quicker and more effective method of vision correction, contact Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery to schedule a free LASIK Consultation in Charleston to find out if your eyes are right for the procedure. Call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com to schedule an appointment online and take a free online LASIK Self-Evaluation

Celebrate Comic Book Day with Superhero Vision

lasik superhero vision

September 25 is National Comic Book Day. There are many genres of comic books from which to choose, such as superhero, manga, humor, science fiction/fantasy, horror, comics and more. People of all ages love comics because they have interesting characters, exciting story lines and detailed graphics.

Today comics are available electronically on tablets, websites and smart phones. But if you prefer the “old school” way of reading printed comics, and you are farsighted (meaning you see distant objects clearly but close-up objects are blurry), you probably have to wear glasses or contacts to read their fine print.

If you’re a comic book fan over age 21, wouldn’t it be great to pick up any comic, any time, day or night, and be able to read it? LASIK vision correction in Charleston can correct farsightedness, allowing many patients to achieve 20/20 vision after the quick procedure. The LASIK process uses a laser to slightly alter the shape of the cornea with superb precision, allowing light to properly focus on the back of the eye (the retina). The actual procedure takes just a few minutes per eye, is virtually painless and most patients are back to work within a day or two.

Visit charlestoncornea.com or call 843-856-5275 to schedule your free LASIK Consultation or take the free online LASIK Self-Evaluation as a first step.

Pirates Don’t Wear Glasses

Blackbeard…Captain Kidd…Black Bart…Redbeard…even Jack Sparrow…

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a pirate who wore glasses (there were plenty of eye patches, though). Does that mean that all pirates had 20/20 vision? Probably not; but it’s safe to assume that pirates didn’t have access to good eye care.

Even if a pirate did manage to visit an eye doctor and find out his vision was less-than-perfect, the idea of wearing eye glasses wasn’t too appealing. (After all, a pirate had a reputation to uphold!) And LASIK vision correction wasn’t FDA-approved before the late 1990s, so all the gleamin’ booty in the world wouldn’t make that an option.

Why are we talking about pirates? September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It’s a day for you to connect with your inner pirate and toss about a few “Aarrs” and “Blimeys” with friends, family and co-workers. You may even want to don an eye patch for the occasion. But if you have to wear glasses to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, it will be almost impossible to look authentic with an eye patch over your glasses.

Avast! If you want to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day by looking like a pirate (meaning, no glasses), find out if LASIK vision correction in Charleston is right for you. Call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com to schedule your free LASIK Consultation at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery.

Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery won’t hornswaggle you with the cost of LASIK and they will even provide LASIK financing optionsto make better vision more affordable

Get LASIK Before Fall Allergy Season

Fall is a beautiful time of year. The temperatures get cooler, colors begin to change and football season gets into full swing. But it’s hard to enjoy fall when you have seasonal allergies caused by ragweed, dust mites, molds and other airborne irritants…especially if those allergens tend to attack your eyes.

Annoyances and Dangers of Wearing Contacts with Allergies

Wearing contact lenses during allergy season can cause eye pain or irritation, and if your eyes become watery or itchy with allergies, contacts are almost impossible to keep in your eyes. Rubbing your eyes while wearing contacts can cause the lens to tear and scratch your eye or lead to an infection if a foreign object gets under the lens. Allergen particles also tend to stick to soft contacts, requiring you to clean them more often, use eye drops frequently or switch to daily-wear contacts.

Hate Your Glasses? Consider LASIK!

If you don’t like the idea of wearing your glasses to root on your favorite team, go on hayrides or even just for work every day, consider getting LASIK vision correction in Charleston before allergy season strikes. LASIK won’t prevent your seasonal allergies, but the procedure may help you achieve 20/20 vision so you can say goodbye to glasses and contacts and hello to clear vision.

The good news is that LASIK at Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery takes only minutes per eye, and most patients are seeing with improved vision the day after the procedure. But, you have to be approved for Charleston LASIK before you can schedule the procedure, and that requires you have a free LASIK Consultation where Dr. O'Day will assess your eye health. Call 843-856-5275 or visit charlestoncornea.com today to schedule your free LASIK Consultation and get some allergy relief with LASIK.

Sport Eye Injuries and Cataracts

At Charleston Cornea and Refractive Surgery, we encourage our patients to maintain an active lifestyle, and participation in sports is a great way to do that. However, it is also extremely important that people of all ages protect their eyes while playing sports in order to minimize the chance of a sports-related eye injury in Charleston. It is estimated that 90% of sports-related eye injuries can be prevented by wearing protective eyewear.

According to past statistics from the Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injuries, there have been as many as 600,000 eye injuries each year related to sports and recreation. The group considers the following sports to be high-to-moderate risk of eye injury (some may surprise you):
  • Fishing
  • Golf
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Softball
  • Lacrosse
  • Hockey
  • Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Volleyball
  • Water Polo
  • Football
  • Air Rifle
  • BB Gun
  • Paintball
  • Boxing
  • Martial Arts
  • Cricket
  • Squash
  • Racquetball
  • Fencing
  • Badminton

It is estimated that 90% of sports-related eye injuries, such as blunt trauma, penetration injuries and more, can be prevented by wearing protective eyewear. If you wear prescription glasses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, your regular glasses will not provide adequate protection. Polycarbonate lenses can provide the right protection during sports, which means that you will have to wear contact lenses in order to see well.

If you cannot wear contact lenses, or if you simply don’t like wearing them, you may be risking your eyesight by not having the ability to wear the right polycarbonate lenses. LASIK vision correction is one option to help improve your natural vision and give you the visual freedom to participate in sports more safely.

So, whether you play leisurely rounds of golf, fast-action basketball or any type of sport, protect your eyes. And if you are interested in learning more about LASIK in Charleston, contact Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery at 843-856-5275 or charlestoncornea.com to schedule a free LASIK Consultation.
